General

Are Monange products manufactured in France?

Yes, Monange Audio product is hand built at our factory here in Mutzig, France. The majority of our subcontractors are located in France.

The softwares on the processors are all designed in house by our engineering team.

All tests, validations and certifications are made in-house.

How much airspace do I need around the amplifier?

For our amplifiers, 3cm on the back and the sides is sufficient.

Please don't place the amplifier in an enclosed cabinet and let at least 1 meter of free air above it. If this isn't possible please give us a call for further options.

Is an amplifier of 35 Watts powerful enough?

An number of factors influences the required wattage. The loudspeaker sensitivity, which characterize how much sound is produced for each watt, is the most common one.

As an illustration of its importance, a speaker with 85 dB efficiency rating will take twice the amplifier power to reach the same volume as a speaker with 88 dB efficiency.

The majority of today's manufactured loudspeakers runs between 88 to 92 dB sensitivity, which gives plenty of power for each watt.

It is alswo generally admited that each "tube watt" is equivalent to tree solid state watts.

It is sometimes said that vacuum tube amplifiers are not reliable.

Each technology has its weakness and strength. The design, build quality, maintenance and proper use ensure reliability.

Tubes are still present in high-constraints environments such as radar, radio transmitters and medical equipments. The tube technology is well understood and is naturally simple and rugged.

Also, please note that all Monange amplifiers are tested electrically, physically and sonically.

Isn't Vacuum Tube amplifier technology obsolete?

Clearly No. Many people think tube technology is obsolete since solid state has replaced it in some uses.

The facts are that tubes are still present in many high-constraints environments such as radar, radio transmitters and medical equipments, and are still a must-to-have in High-End audio.

 

 

About Tubes

How long do the tubes last?

There are two types of tubes in ou amplifier : the small pre-amplifier tubes and the power tubes.

The first typically last 5000 hours before they need to be replaced. We recommand replacing them each two power tube replacement.

The power tubes are larger, and their life expectancy depends on the bias setting. "Typical" lifetimes are about 3000 hours but the main signal is your listening experience.

For a typical use of few hours every days, tubes last about 3 years.

When do i need to replace tubes?

The first criterion is a tube's maximum life expectancy.

There are different reasons for tube replacement.

As tubes are getting weak, the tone of the amplifier changes slightly. As a reaction, the Smart Bias adjusts electrical parameters to maintain the bias value. But when tubes will be completely worn out, the sound will become dull or rolled off.

Sometimes the tubes will also make noise or even fail. The failure will be detected by the Smart Bias. You will need to switch off the amplifier immediately and change the tubes.

Are matched tubes a must to have ?

Tubes are paired on static characteristics basis that is, without sound. While this gives similary bias current with basic biasing methods, this does not give identical tubes.

Thanks to the Smart Bias Technology, there is no need for matched set, because the bias value will be adjusted automatically.

Hence, we recommend when you change your power tubes that you do so in matched sets, because the dynamic characteristics will be more similar, and the sound could be better.

Are tubes easy to replace?

Yes, but be aware, they are glass bulbs !

Tubes are only able to be installed in the correct orientation. Please refer to the manual for instructions

Where can I get replacement tubes?

We recommend you buying tubes from your local distributor, where you will find best quality.

Can I use NOS (new old stock) tubes in my amp or preamp?

You can use NOS tubes, but be sure the tubes come from a reliable source and that they are both quiet and non-microphonic.

How can I compare my tubes ?

We do not recommend pulling tubes in and out many times.

If you really wants to compare, the best way is to spend a day listening with one tube, and another day with the other tube.

Even if tube sockets are very durable, changing tubes houndred times can loosen the contacts.

The small tubes makes a flash at start-up. Is that normal?

Some small tubes flashes at startup because their internal heater resistance is low when cold. This vary from tubes to tubes. But having a flash from power tubes is not normal.

Can i tape on tubes ?

DO NOT tap on tubes, you will break them.

Tubes are electro mechanical parts working at very high temperature. You will make them microcphonic by displacing grids, or even break them !

 

 

Installation

What speakers do you recommend?

We recommend you use the speakers that sound best to you!

Be sure to get speaker with a minimum sensitivity of 90db, as this is usually a better choice.

Do you recommend a specific brand of cables?

You need high-quality calbe to get the best from the amplifier, but the final reslult depends on many parameters such as your music source and your speakers. It is then better to do some listening tests and select the cable that sounds the best for you.

Is it worthwhile to upgrade my power cord?

We designed the amplifier to be independant and reject glitches and noises from power supply. Even if the supplied power cords is not the prettiest, it is sufficient.

But you can still test another cable if you want.

Can I compare loudspeakers ?

To compare loudspeakers, be sure to power off the amplifier.

Should you wish not to power off the amplifier, you will need to cut off your audio source and set the volume to his minimum level before disconnecting any cable.

Vacuum tube amplifiers are in some way the opposite of solid state amplifiers : transistors amplifiers doesn't endure short circuits on their output whereas tubes amplifiers doesn't endure disconnection of loudspeakers.
